Selfcare with Dani Collins

When you are writing and editing a book, how do you look after yourself?

I’m a fairly healthy and health-conscious person overall so I eat a ton of veggies and do yoga every day. I visit the gym twice a week and get outside even if it’s just for a stroll around the yard. My kryptonite is potato chips and a glass of wine, but I’m currently on the wagon where those are concerned.

Lately, I’ve also been  on a social media diet, only checking in on weekends. That’s been working for me in terms of helping with focus when I’m writing and improving my overall mood.

Self-care? Make-up and hair etc?

I grew up with a lot of eczema so I’m very careful what goes onto my skin. I like very simple ingredients and skip fragrance whenever possible, since it often caused me irritation. I moisturize a couple times a day and wear sunscreen if I’m going to be in the sun, but I don’t wear much make-up. I have been putting blonde streaks into my hair for about 40 years so the few times I’ve stopped doing it, like during the pandemic, people didn’t recognize me. But I don’t fuss with my hair much beyond that.

Do you dress up every day?

Absolutely not. I don’t wear a bra unless I have to. I typically wear yoga pants and a T-shirt or tank top, then whatever top layers I need to get me through the winter.

Share something funny about when you are not prepared for visitors.

My husband and I are a tiny bit anti-social so we don’t encourage drop ins, lol. I know that’s not entirely healthy and I am trying to be more accessible to my neighbors, but for many years I needed to set hard boundaries around being someone who worked from home.

I guess one funny story is when my in-laws came for a visit. I was expecting them, but I was surprised when they brought bedding with them. It wasn’t new bedding and I realized years later that they were trying to save me some laundry, but at the time I thought it was so weird that they had brought all these well-worn sheets. I guess they were equally surprised when I didn’t give them back when they left, but they didn’t say anything. The whole thing was very confusing for me!

  1. People who don't warn you they're coming over are rude. (I'm a homebody, too.)

  2. I'm a home body too. I don't mind drop ins except when I'm decided to get comfy and am in my PJ's early. :)

    1. It's not easy, but so worth it! The trick is to find alternate activities. For me, reading is a good one.
