Giving Back by Janice Lynn

It is better to give than receive. Most of us have probably heard that numerous times over our life. It's true. At least, for me it sure has been.

When I sold to Hallmark Publishing, I'd never heard of the Quilts of Valor Foundation. Hard to believe since they play such an integral role in my Hallmark stories, but it's true. I sold in September 2018 and my son enlisted in the Army National Guard in November. I decided I wanted to make him a patriotic quilt that I started on the day he left for boot camp in January and finished on the day I picked him up in March.

I began looking at quilt patterns online and kept coming across "QOV", "Quilts of Valor", and "QOVF". When I clicked to see what that was I was blown away by their mission because it so closely matched what my quilter heroine did in Wrapped Up in Christmas. I'm a quilter (by heart, not skill, believe me) so I got involved with the organization.

I've now presented 3 quilts to military servicemen and been involved with making several. Let me tell you, one of the greatest honors of my life was wrapping a 97 year old WWII POW veteran in a Quilt of Valor and welcoming him home. It gave me all the warm fuzzies and even just writing about it makes me smile and feel good inside.

Being involved with Quilts of Valor has changed my life for the better in so many ways. I love using my stories to bring awareness to their wonderful mission and hope I always do well by them.

I truly believe that doing for others is where deep down happiness comes from so if you're not involved with an organization or a church group or a friend group where you can lift yourself up by lifting up someone else, I highly recommend you find your passion and get involved.
