Squeaky Clean with Mollie Blake

Squeaky Clean is Best

I have been lucky in my life to be complimented on my skin on many occasions. Once, I even had my make-up done professionally, and the artist said my skin was in excellent condition.

Now, I’m not one of those women blessed with lovely skin and beautiful hair – far from it. I had eczema as a child and one of the ways to alleviate the problem was to not use soap. To this day, I have never used soap of any kind on my face.

As I grew older, I began to wear make-up. I wear it every day, even if I don’t intend to leave the house. It makes me feel complete, must be how I am. So, how was I to take this make-up off?

In one of many magazines for women, I read that it was important to use a cleanser every night. And it’s not just to remover your make-up. During the day our face is continually covered with bacteria, pollutants, dirt…and dead skin cells, yuk! If you kept this thought in mind, you’d never go to sleep until you were squeaky clean again.

So my advice is the same as Clinque’s

Take the day off

What to use is another question. I don’t want to spend ages taking off what it took me a few minutes to put on! I have used wipes, and when I’m away I still do, they’re easy to pack. But I don’t find them very effective and no matter which type I use, I feel they leave my skin dry – I can almost feel their harshness.

I have two products I’d like to share with you.

Number one – Ponds Cold Cream

Not that I spend all my time reading women’s magazine, after all I’m an author & far too busy!,  but I did read about this simple and very effective product. I gave it a go, and never used anything else for several years, wipes on holiday excepted. Every night I coated my skin in the light white cream, paying particular attention to the eyes. My lashes are always layered with Estee Lauder’s LBP - Little Black Primer and Lancome’s Hypnose Drama (note – no “queen” on end:) and I always pay particular attention to them. I remove the cream with cotton wool pads, or you can rinse with warm water. I believe cold water is even better as it tightens the skin. The cold cream removes everything, including the eye make-up easily. I’m not left feeling my eyes are dry or saggy and my skin feels cleansed and soft.

Number two – Clinique’s take the day off

About a year ago I was shopping with my niece and she was looking for a make-up remover. Her friend’s mum used one by Clinique so we headed over to the counter and found this. It’s described as a “cleansing balm” and I was so impressed with the texture that I bought us both one. I love it.
It transforms from a “solid balm to a silky fluid oil. Cleans thoroughly.”
I couldn’t agree more.
Again, I remove with cotton wool and my skin is left feeling clean and soft.

Of course, the result of having clean skin comes at a price. And I’m not referring to the money in our purse.

After brushing my teeth, and flossing when I force myself to be good, I take my make-up off and use eye cream and moisturiser. Every night. My husband brushes and always flosses (!) his teeth. Then he gets in to bed. I have to turn the light off. Even though he is closer to the switch. It pisses me off!

However, don’t you ever wonder how those women on TV manage to look so gorgeous when they’re in bed making love? Why haven’t they taken the trouble to take their make-up of first? Presumably they’ll fall into a blissful post-coital slumber afterwards. Why, they even manage to wake up still looking gorgeous – with last night’s make-up!

Well, there are some sacrifices I am willing to make. When passion is in the air, I leave my make up on. I still have to get up, take it off, moisturise, and turn the damn light off. But it’s worth it. And so am I.

So remember. No matter how dirty you sometimes want to be, always end up in bed squeaky clean.

    1. Me too. Yesterday had luxury at a spa with a "revitalising ritual" consisting of a body scrub which cleansed and moisturised. It was wonderful. In the book the protagonist has certain skills which leave you feeling lovely too 😍

  4. Hmmm...my mom used to use Pond’s for everything but I never even thought of it. I love anything and everything by Kiehl’s...and I still love Noxcema...and good old Vaseline on eyelashes and brows at night!
